How a stream looks and behaves can be a very complex balance of physical elements that in turn affect the chemical and biological aspects of that stream.
Natural stream design is a method of stream remediation and modification required as a result of various impacts to a natural system. These impacts include both natural and anthropogenic events. Historically, streams that interfered with landowners and infrastructure were dealt with using a variety of tools including bulldozers and rip rap. These efforts typically were aimed at keeping a stream in its channel, and from cutting away at streambanks. Natural Stream Design is the practice of working streams so that they:
- Function naturally
- Provide suitable habitat
- Maintain stability over time
Projects are often extremely challenging and require specific expertise in the following areas:
- Hydraulic engineering
- Aquatic ecology
- Fluvial geomorphology
